Reception for 2012 Utah Carnegie Professor of the Year Michael Christiansen
Thursday, Dec. 06, 2012
The Utah State University campus community is invited to congratulate Michael Christiansen, the 2012 Utah Carnegie Professor of the Year, at a reception in his honor Dec. 12. The reception is hosted by USU President Stan Albrecht and Executive Vice President and Provost Raymond T. Coward.
The reception is Dec. 12, 3:30-5:30 p.m. at the David B. Haight Alumni Center. A presentation is planned at 4:15 p.m.
Christiansen was named Utah’s 2012 Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching Utah Professor of the Year at a ceremony Nov. 15 in Washington, D.C. The award program recognizes higher education professionals across the United States and is administered by the Council for Advancement and Support of Education — CASE. The award salutes the most outstanding undergraduate educators in the country — those who excel in teaching and positively influence the lives and careers of students. The award program is the only national program that recognizes excellence in undergraduate teaching.
Christiansen earned both bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Utah State and joined the music department faculty in 1977. When he began, USU’s guitar program did not exist, but through his dedication and vision, it has now grown to be a unique and noted program, acknowledged nationally.
Throughout his career, Christiansen has combined a passion for teaching and performing. He has taught more than 8,000 students and has performed in multiple musical styles as a soloist, band member and with entertainment giants. His numerous books, instructional DVDs and broadcast distance education courses have positively impacted learners throughout the world.
“Mike is one of the most highly respected music educators in America,” wrote President Albrecht in his nomination letter for Christiansen. “Mike has literally written the book on guitar instruction.”
The reception honoring Christiansen is open to all Utah State University students, staff and faculty.
