UNIVERSITY ARCHIVIST BOB PARSON PRESENTS SPRING ‘FRIENDS’ LECTURE
LOGAN — In advance of Utah State University’s Founders Day celebration and its 125th birthday, a special lecture has been planned by the Friends of Merrill-Cazier Library, an organization that supports and promotes activities throughout USU’s University Libraries division.
Guest speaker for the evening is Robert “Bob” Parson, the university archivist. He presents “A Few Things I’ve Learned while Working in the Archives” Wednesday, March 6, at 7 p.m. in Merrill-Cazier Library, Room 101. The presentation is free and all are invited.
Parson became university archivist in 1991. He said he worries about people finding out what a great job he has because, “there are simply not enough dusty documents to go around.”
Nevertheless, Parson will provide a candid insiders look at the university’s archives while recounting some of the things he’s learned about the university’s history.
Parson grew up on the family farm in Benson, Utah, where he lives today. He studied history at USU and earned a bachelor’s degree in 1981 and a master’s degree in 1983. He is the author of two books, “The History of Rich County” and “Providence and Her People.” He is a regular contributor to the “Utah Historical Quarterly.” His article “Leftward March” — about students’ liberalism at Utah State University in the 1930s — won the 2007 article of the year. And, when Parson is not driving his tractor in Benson, he can be found playing the blues with his band, the Blue Blazers.
In addition to the lecture, the winners of the 2012 Leonard J. Arrington writing awards will be announced.
Friends of Merrill-Cazier Library is a community-based group that promotes awareness of the library’s resources, facilities and personnel. Its mission is to enrich library resources and sponsor outreach activities throughout the year, including fall and spring lectures.
