Utah State University’s Old Lyric Repertory Company presents James and the Giant Peach as part of the 2013 summer season, opening July 10 at the Caine Lyric Theatre in downtown Logan.
“This show is part of the Lyric season because it’s one that everybody can relate to,” said Dennis Hassan, artistic director of the OLRC and professor in the Caine College of the Arts. “Audience members will cheer James, the underdog, on as he overcomes his situation through magic, teamwork and imagination.”
Whizzpopping wonder and fruit-filled fun abound in the stage adaption of Roald Dahl’s greatest adventure. Meet James, a lonely young boy who is forced to work like a slave for the most revolting aunts in England. One day a mystical old man gives him a bag of magic, and when he accidentally spills it near the old peach tree, the most incredible things happen.
“James and the Giant Peach is a wonderful opportunity for families to spend time together and share a great experience,” said Hassan.
Showcased in the production are young actors who are participating in OLRC’s Intern and Apprentice Program, supported by a grant from the George S. and Dolores Doré Eccles Foundation. The program provides a hands-on theater experience working side by side with the professional OLRC staff.
For James and the Giant Peach, a family ticket special is available. With the purchase of one adult ticket to the show, kids get in for 50 percent off. The show opens July 10 and runs on selected dates through Aug. 8. A complete OLRC summer schedule is available online.
The OLRC 2013 season also features Nunsense, The Odd Couple, The Drowsy Chaperone and The Woman in Black. This season marks the centennial anniversary of the Caine Lyric Theatre and the OLRC will celebrate with a performance July 29.
