Multiple Students, Multiple Instruments are Showcased in Performance

Utah State University’s Department of Music presents “Music Therapy Eclectic Recital” Oct. 29 at 7:30 p.m. in the Performance Hall on USU’s Logan campus.
“People don’t realize that music therapists are musicians in their own right,” said Maureen Hearns, director of the music therapy program and professor in the Caine College of the Arts. “So once a year we give students the opportunity to showcase their skills in a concert.”
The concert will feature multiple students in the music therapy program, ranging from freshmen to seniors.
“In the program, students learn the piano, guitar and voice, but many play other instruments as well, such as the harp and violin,” said Hearns. “This concert gives them a chance to perform on any of their instruments with their classmates or by themselves.”
One of the students will dance an Irish jig, accompanied by another student on the fiddle. Other students will perform on the harp, banjo, saxophone and more.
“As music therapists, we are incredibly diverse but we don’t have many opportunities to display our talents,” said Celsie Sirrine, a senior in the music therapy program. “Though we complete a practicum, our focus there is to help our clients, not perform. It’s great to have the opportunity to perform something we’ve been studying.”
Tickets for the eclectic recital are $10 adults, $8 seniors and youth, $5 USU faculty and staff and free for USU students with ID.
