Dean Named for USU's College of Engineering
Monday, Nov. 04, 2013
Christine E. Hailey has been named dean of Utah State University’s College of Engineering. USU’s board of trustees approved Hailey’s appointment effective Nov. 1.
Hailey served as interim dean for the college since July 2013 when the previous dean of the college, H. Scott Hinton, was named president of USU’s Research Foundation.
“Scott left the College of Engineering in great shape,” Hailey said. “He worked 10 years to push the college to a new level and I am excited to build upon what he started.”
Engineers make a world of difference and we are in a time and place where we need solutions to issues ranging from health to national defense to energy and environment, Hailey continued.
“I am fortunate to have such an outstanding group of faculty, staff and students and I can’t think of a better place to create those solutions than right here in USU’s College of Engineering,” Hailey said.
Hailey is a professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering and served as the senior associate dean in the college during Hinton’s administration. At USU she is director of the National Center for Engineering and Technology Education, a National Science Foundation-funded center for learning and teaching. She was a member of the ADVANCE-US team, another NSF-funded program to address issues that impact the effectiveness and satisfaction of female faculty in the engineering and science colleges at USU.
“I am delighted that Chris is ready and willing to step into the dean’s role,” said USU Provost Noelle Cockett. “She will be a great contributor to the university’s leadership and will serve as a worthy role model for women in engineering and across campus. I am confident that Chris will provide excellent leadership in education, research and outreach over the years to come.”
Hailey is a licensed professional engineer who spent close to 10 years working at Sandia National Laboratories before coming to USU.
