USU's faculty woodwind quintet, the Logan Canyon Winds, performs in Park City Nov. 10 at the Swaner EcoCenter.

Utah State University’s Department of Music presents Logan Canyon Winds, USU’s Caine College of the Arts faculty woodwind quintet, performing Nov. 10 at 4 p.m. at the Swaner EcoCenter in Park City, Utah.

“I’ve never been to the Swaner EcoCenter, but I’m looking forward to this performance more than any other concert in my eight years with Logan Canyon Winds,” said Bonnie Schroeder, oboist in Logan Canyon Winds. “The program we’ve chosen was designed to fit perfectly with the season and the location.”

All of the pieces Logan Canyon Winds will perform are by American composers. The first piece the quintet will play is Pastorale, Op 151 by Amy Beach, which Schroeder says evokes the peace of an afternoon spent in the woods.

Next is Autumn Music by Jennifer Higdon.

“This piece portrays the passage of autumn from the brilliant colors of September to the more melancholy mood of December,” said Schroeder.

The third piece is Jenni Brandon’s Five Frogs. Schroeder says this piece is perfect for the wetland preserve at the Swaner EcoCenter.

“Each of the movements features one instrument of the quintet as a frog,” said Schroeder. “In the last movement all of the ‘frogs’ sing together in the pond.”

The program closes with Dark Winds Rising for woodwind quintet.

“We are honored to have the composer of this piece, Phillip Bimstein, present for this performance,” said Schroeder. “The theme of his work is the effort of the Kaibab Paiute Tribe to prevent a toxic waste incinerator from being built on their land.”

The performance is free and open to the public, but seating is limited so RSVP to or call 435-797-8936.

The Swaner EcoCenter is at 1258 Center Drive in Park City. For more information, visit the Caine College of the Arts Box Office in room 139-B of the Chase Fine Arts Center on the Logan campus, call 435-797-8022 see the college’s Production Services website.
