USU's Equine Science Program Holds Second Annual Horse Auction; Open House
Thursday, Feb. 06, 2014
Utah State University’s Equine Science Program will conduct an online production sale featuring 11 exceptionally bred yearlings and two-year-old horses, beginning Feb. 10 and ending Feb. 17. A preview day is Saturday, Feb. 8, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. All proceeds of the auction will benefit the Equine Science Program.
“Our students assisted with breeding the mares that produced these horses and now they have been working with them to get them ready for sale,” said Dirk Vanderwall, interim department head for the Department of Animal, Dairy and Veterinary Sciences at USU. “It’s been a great learning opportunity for them.”
The sires of the yearlings and two-year-olds include racing champion Separatist, a sire with a lifetime earnings of $900,000, and cow-cutting horse Smooth As A Cat, a sire with $500,000 in lifetime earnings. Other sires include Rio Starlight, Chasin Firewater, Boonlight Dancer, RC Fancy Step and Hydrive Cat.
The two-year-olds have also been through the program’s colt breaking class supervised by Jason Romney, a lecturer for the program with extensive experience and awards working and training horses.
Interested parties are encouraged to attend the auction’s preview day at USU’s Equine Education Center, located at 3580 South Highway 89/91 in Wellsville, Utah. No purchase can be made on the preview day.
