Life-Saving AEDs are Located Throughout the USU Main Campus

The Easy-to-use Devices Save Lives

LOGAN — Utah State University has placed Automated External Defibrillator’s (AED) at various locations throughout the main Logan campus to be used by the campus community in case of emergency cardiac problem.

An AED is a portable electronic device that automatically diagnoses the life threatening cardiac arrhythmias or ventricular tachycardia in a patient and is able to treat them through defibrillation.

With simple audio and visual commands, AEDs are designed to be simple to use by the layperson. Unlike regular defibrillators, an automated external defibrillator requires minimal training to use.

“We want the campus community to know that they are available and should be used in case of an emergency as every second counts,” said Judy Crockett, USU emergency management coordinator. “They are simple and easy to use as they provide step-by-step vocal instructions to the user.”

AEDs do save lives. USU basketball player Danny Berger suffered from sudden cardiac arrest on Dec. 4, 2012. Because an AED was accessible, Berger is alive today.

“I might not be here today without an AED,” said Berger. “I encourage you to get to know where the AEDs are and don’t be afraid to use them, it saved my life.”

Those interested in learning more about AEDs may watch a short training video at ( Crockett is also available for staff meetings or special training.

A complete list of AEDs on USU’s campus is located at the website ( In addition, Logan City Dispatch can assist 9-1-1 callers in locating the AED nearest to the scene of an emergency on the USU campus.
