USU Professor Receives Award Recognizing Work Promoting Safe Pesticide Use

Richard Beard, an associate professor in the School of Applied Sciences, Technology and Education at Utah State University, was presented the Career Contribution to the Association award at the Utah Pest Control and Lawncare Association’s annual convention.

The UPCLA is a non-profit organization representing pest control, lawn care and licensed pesticide applicator businesses in the state of Utah. It encourages safe use of pesticides through integrated pest management practices and works with the Utah Department of Agriculture and Food on pesticide laws and issues.

Beard, a member since the organization’s founding, said when the association began in 1996 it had 20 participates. Since then the association has grown to more than 300 professionals, including business owners and managers.

Beard has worked to train UPCLA’s members and employees on safety requirements as well as multimedia presentations for the organization.

“The educational benefits of working with this organization have proved mutually beneficial,” Beard said. “I have learned a great deal from working with these professionals, and I am proud that they feel thankful for my contributions.”

Every year UPCLA schedules Beard to present on a topic selected by the board of directors. Beard said most of his presentations are on what the new technology, safety, business or legal concerns the members have involving pest management.

“It has been a very enjoyable and educational experience,” Beard said. “I look forward to working with this group for many years.”
