National Bike Challenge Kick-off

Utah State University kicked off the National Bike Challenge with a Bike to Breakfast at Aggie Blue Bikes April 24. More than 100 cyclists enjoyed a locally-sourced pancake and egg breakfast while getting information about cycling. Utah State University Sustainability Council, Aggie Blue Bikes, Employee Wellness Program and Dining Services collaborated on the event to encourage students and employees to cycle as a healthy, low carbon transportation option. Oakdell Egg Farms and Central Milling Company supported the event.
The National Bike Challenge is a free, nationwide competition held from May to September for bicyclists of all levels. The challenge offers opportunities to compete on a local, state or national level by logging miles online for fun, fitness or transportation. Last year, USU won the competition in the university category with more than 200 participants cycling more than 90,000 miles throughout the competition.
“We have so many cyclists on the USU campus — employees and students,” said Alexi Lamm, USU sustainability coordinator. “We wanted to kick off the Bike Challenge in a fun way with local food and encourage cyclists to unite whether cycling for fun, transportation, sport, fitness, or however they want. If everyone cycles a few miles this summer in the National Bike Challenge, we’ll win again,”
Utah State University promotes cycling as a part of programs to improve air quality and human health.
Additional events during May include Bike to School and Work Week May 12-17 and a Family Bicycling Funshop on May 24.
Aggie Blue Bikes will begin extended hours on Wednesday nights, 5-7 p.m., to accommodate more employees and students, and the Employee Wellness Program launches a USU Outdoor Cycling Club starting May 13 and continuing Tuesdays and Thursdays throughout the summer. The Utah State University Sustainability Council formed in 2007 after the University became a signatory to the American College and University Presidents’ Climate Commitment (ACUPCC).
