Walmart Foundation Donates Thousands to USU Extension's EFNEP Program

Resources and goals of the Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program (EFNEP) in Utah have broadened following a recent $25,000 donation from the Walmart Foundation to support the program. EFNEP, a program sponsored by Utah State University Extension, is tasked to provide free nutrition education to assist limited-resource individuals and families in acquiring the skills and knowledge necessary to achieve improved health.
According to Paula Scott, USU Extension associate professor and director of EFNEP, the Walmart Foundation grant will assist the program in promoting the importance of eating fruits and vegetables through various marketing and information channels.
“This money will help us market our program and let people know that we are here to help and can provide information on health and nutrition,” Scott said. “The whole idea is to increase the consumption of fruits and vegetables.”
Scott’s grant proposal specified two goals: strengthening EFNEP’s program delivery to increase fruit and vegetable consumption and to buy into the “Buy Local” movement to promote sustainable food for a healthy lifestyle. To accomplish the first, EFNEP will provide their clients with additional fruit and vegetable information via fact sheets, brochures and visual aids. The second will be accomplished by partnering with the USU Botanical Center Farmers Market to provide educational displays and food demonstrations there.
“We are grateful to the Walmart Foundation for providing the resources to help us strengthen and promote healthy lifestyles in Utah,” said Scott. “Their donation will help us guide the development of sustainable actions at the community level which will result in a reduced risk of major health problems and obesity.”
