Brian Higginbotham recently secured a contract for $2.4 million to support parenting and relationship classes in Utah.

Brian Higginbotham, Utah State University Extension associate vice president, recently secured a contract for $2.4 million to support parenting and relationship classes in Utah. The contract is in partnership with the Utah Department of Workforce Services (DWS) and runs through June 2017.

USU Extension educators and agents recently received training in the program and will teach relationship and parenting education courses at DWS work success locations, high schools and in Utah communities.

Higginbotham said the USU Extension programs that target individuals in stepfamilies, parenting and pre-marital relationships have been shown to enhance relationship stability, individual relationships and overall family well-being.

“Research has shown that enhancing relationship skills also improves workforce productivity,” he said.

The DWS and USU Extension partnership will focus on preventing out-of-wedlock pregnancies and encouraging the formation and maintenance of two-parent families. Three curricula will be used: parenting education courses will use the Love and Logic curriculum, relationship education for singles will use the Finding Healthy Relationships curriculum (also known as P.I.C.K.), and relationship education for individuals in coupled relationships will use the Couple LINKS curriculum.

Educators and Extension agents will teach the relationship courses in 11 counties, including Box Elder, Cache, Carbon, Davis, Iron, Salt Lake, Sevier, Tooele, Utah, Washington and Weber.

“Marriage, relationship and parenting education is an important USU Extension programmatic area, and we are happy that Extension continues to receive funding to implement these effective programs,” Higginbotham said.
