USU Alumni Band July 26: Celebrating USU's Year of Water
Utah State University’s Alumni Band performs this Sunday, July 26, in a 7 p.m. outdoor concert at the Quad on the university’s Logan campus.
Founded in 1963 by director of bands emeritus Max F. Dalby, the Alumni Band has been in existence for more than 50 years. This summer marks the band’s 52nd season.
“We will be celebrating USU’s ‘Year of Water’ with special guests Noelle E. Cockett, executive vice president and provost of USU, and Mac McKee, director of the Utah Water Research Laboratory,” said Nick Morrison, the band’s conductor and senior associate dean in the Caine College of the Arts at USU.”
When the university’s “Year of Water” organizing committee met, it wanted the year-long celebration to include multiple campus disciplines, including those that might not be directly involved in water research and study. The USU Alumni Band was invited to join the activities and this concert was planned.
“It’s an honor for the band to be able to showcase this important research and extension activity of Utah State University,” Morrison said.
Utah State University engineers, hydrologists, agronomists, sociologists, climate scientists and other researchers across a range of disciplines are the foremost voices on issues related to water in the state and beyond. USU’s water specialists are among the nation’s leading experts on many water-related issues, particularly in the areas of management, ecosystems, climate, water education and society’s understanding of this precious resource.
The Utah Water Research Laboratory (UWRL) has been a leader in applied research aimed at solving current and emerging interdisciplinary water related challenges in Utah and around the globe. This year marks the 50th anniversary of the dedication of the Utah Water Research Laboratory building.
Along with being the executive director or the UWRL, McKee is a professor of civil and environmental engineering with diverse experience in flood control, water supply, irrigation and drainage and water quality management.
To pair with the “water” theme, the Alumni Band will perform pieces that include Vaughan Williams’ “Sea Songs,” Sousa’s “Hands Across the Sea” and the finale from Handel/Kay’s “Water Music.”
Also on the program is Sam Meredith, the Caine College of the Arts’ student senator in the Utah State University Student Association. He is the soloist in “Ol’ Man River.”
Up next is this year’s last Alumni band concert, Aug. 9.
All Alumni Band performances begin at 7 p.m. and are free and open to the public. Concerts are held on the USU Quad. In case of inclement weather, performances will be held in the Morgan Theatre in the Chase Fine Arts Center.
