Service Positions with the UCC

Summer-Only AmeriCorps Crew Leader Positions

Challenge yourself as a leader of a 4–8 person crew while conducting conservation service work in some of the most beautiful places in the West. As a crew leader, you will be leading crews on restoration, trail, and fence projects within Utah's national parks and forests. Summer crew leaders undergo a two week training period before assuming the role of AmeriCorps Crew Leader. Crew leaders must be at least 21 and have solid leadership skills, outdoor experience, a positive attitude, maturity, and flexibility.

Start Date: May 15, 2008

End Date: August 16, 2008

AmeriCorps Crew Member Positions for Summer & Fall 2008

AmeriCorps crew members spend 3–6 months living and working outside as part of a 4–8 member crew. They complete demanding and rewarding trail, restoration, and fence projects in partnership with the National Park Service, Forest Service, and BLM. Crew members must be at least 18 and have a strong desire to work hard, be a part of a team, travel to beautiful places, and live out of a tent.

Crew Member Start Dates: June 9 and August 20, 2008

Application Deadlines: June 6 and August 6, 2008 (applications must include application, resume, and a professional letter of recommendation)

Benefits include:

  • $2,938 living allowance ($979/month for 3 months)
  • $1,250 education award (upon completion of 3-month term of service)

Access to Service Inclusive Crew

The UCC will be hiring eight AmeriCorps members to serve on an inclusive crew made up of corps members with and without physical disabilities. Accommodations and adaptive equipment will be made available to crew members with disabilities so that they can fully participate. This crew will focus on making developed areas within the Wasatch-Cache National Forest accessible to people with disabilities and developing an accessible community garden. The inclusive crew will receive the same crew member benefits.

AmeriCorps positions with Non-Profits

The UCC is placing individual AmeriCorps members to serve with a variety of non-profit organizations that focus on environmental conservation. These one year (1700-hour) positions give members the opportunity to gain professional and teaching experience that frequently leads to permanent employment with the non-profits they serve. In 2008, the UCC will place individuals with the following non-profit organizations:

Professional Positions with the UCC

Crew Supervisors

Position Description: Provide professional leadership and technical expertise to crews and ensure that all members are adequately trained and prepared to perform high quality work in a positive, safe environment.

  • Serve as an on-site role model, resource, mediator, and advisor for crews
  • Work with UCC staff to develop training program
  • Teach/present training topics
  • Provide crews with professional feedback in a structured environment
  • Evaluate member performance through mid-term and final evaluations
  • Ensure safety protocols and policies are followed
  • Organize, maintain and purchase tools and equipment for crews
  • Carry a cell phone during the field season so that crews and staff can contact you at all times
  • Assist UCC staff as needed

Compensation:

  • $1,600 - $1,800/month (dependent upon experience)
  • Health insurance
  • Chainsaw Certification (or recert)
  • Optional college credit
  • Performance based bonuses

Qualifications:

  • Degree in related field (recommended)
  • Outdoor leadership experience
  • Trail maintenance experience
  • Wilderness First Responder or Wilderness Advanced First Aid
  • Excellent people/communication skills
  • Desire to live in a tent and work long hours outside
  • Willingness to travel
  • Valid driver's license
