Charge
Underserved student populations can face unique challenges in higher education. Some of the problems they encounter, such as access issues, cultural or experiential differences from other students, or being the first in one’s family to attend college, may cause some students to struggle or to leave school. To encourage the retention and success of these students, the Underserved Student Populations Subcommittee is charged with:
- developing and fostering the implementation of initiatives that support the retention and success of underserved student populations;
- recommending policies to increase the retention of these students; and
- advancing programs and establishing goals for the retention and success of underserved student populations.
The subcommittee consists of a representative from: Student Support Services (TRIO); Gear Up; Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, and Transgendered Office (GLBT); Women’s Resource Center; Disability Resource Center; Veteran Student Services; Multicultural Student Services; Student-Athlete Services; and Retention and Student Success.
Goals
- Launch on ongoing diversity training for administrators, faculty and staff by fall 2010.
- Create a Listserv for staff working with underrepresented student populations by December 2009. The title for the listserv is VOICES for DIVERSITY.
