State of the Art Email for Students

ASUSU’s Academic Senate and Executive Council unanimously approved a resolution recommending that Utah State University’s Information Technology pursue, with full speed, a partnership with Google to host and dramatically enhance USU student email. While the new system is not yet in place, here are some of the benefits you can expect to see.

USU EMAIL FOR LIFE
Even though it will be hosted by Google, it will be a USU email address and an account that students can keep for life, even after they have completed the academic experience at USU — all  free.

FIND IT QUICK
With more than 2 gigabytes of space, students are able to keep a lot of mail. The USU Google partnership will provide advanced search tools to quickly locate the emails you need, no matter how many you keep around.

CALENDAR
Students can organize their schedules and share events and calendars with others.

GOOGLE DOCS AND SPREADSHEETS
Collaborating with peers, sharing and working together on documents, all online, is another great feature available to students.

GOOGLE TALK
Students can call or send instant messages to their contacts.

GO MOBILE
With any Web-enabled phone, students can send and receive email, schedule and retrieve events and reminders from their calendar so they can stay connected.

Want to learn more?
As soon as the new Google-based email system is ready, new students will have the opportunity to create a new account on the system.

Students who presently have an account on cc.usu.edu will have the opportunity to create an  account on the new system. Both the new student email system and the current cc.usu.edu/webmail.usu.edu systems will be active simultaneously to provide ample time for transition. (Similarly, faculty and staff with cc.usu.edu accounts will also migrate to a new faculty/staff email system.) More information on the faculty/staff email can be found online.

While it is anticipated that all students will want to receive a USU Google email account, it is not mandatory. Students can use a different email address. By default, official university email communication will be sent to the preferred email address entered into the Banner Access (SSB) system. Students should update the preferred email address in Banner to reflect the email address to which they wish to receive university information and email.

As the partnership progresses and development begins to take place, USU IT will provide more detailed information, including a transition plan and FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) with answers and information galore. Updates, other information, instructions and support to assist in transitions will be available online.
