Utah State University recognized its top employees at the annual Employee Recognition Luncheon recently.

The university honored more than 280 employees who have worked for at least ten years, including William Furlong, a professor in the Department of Political Science, who has worked at the university for 40 years. Ann Johns was named Outstanding Non-Exempt Classified Employee, and James M. Coburn was selected as the Outstanding Exempt Professional Employee.

Johns is a senior staff assistant in the Sociology, Social Work and Anthropology Department. She joined the department in 2001 as staff assistant II and now works as a senior staff assistant. She was nominated by the department because of her broad range of abilities, willingness to learn and develop new skills, her engaging enthusiasm and excellent performance. “Ann does not simply come to her job each day, but comes with a sense of purpose,” one faculty member in the department wrote.

The two finalists in the Non-Exempt Classified Employee category were LuAnn Stocking, coordinator in the Chemistry and Biochemistry Department, and Kathy Nielsen, staff assistant in the Elementary Education Department.

Coburn is laboratory supervisor in the Physics Department. “James is the one-man department technical expert and resource, who carries out his formal duties with 110 percent commitment,” one person who nominated him wrote. He has endless patience and an extremely friendly working attitude and knowledge of a wide range of technical fields. His interests and hobbies include the dissemination of physics and astronomy to all. His activities in this pursuit go well beyond any departmental role expectation.

The two finalists for the Exempt Professional Employee of the Year were Kathy Petersen, business officer in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, and Sharon Weston, executive assistant in the Center for Persons for Disabilities.
