College of Ag Professor Honored with Outstanding Utah Educator Award

Thursday, Jun. 21, 2012

USU faculty member Lindsey Shirley
USU's Lindsey Shirley received the Outstanding Career and Technical Education Award during the Utah Family and Consumer Sciences Summer Conference.

Utah State University professor Lindsey Shirley was awarded the Outstanding Career and Technical Education Award during the Utah Family and Consumer Sciences Summer Conference held June 13-14 at Brigham Young University. Shirley is an assistant professor in the School of Applied Sciences, Technology and Education in the College of Agriculture.

The award recognizes professors and educators who provide full-time service beyond the classroom setting. It is presented to those specific educators who sacrifice their personal time and talents in order to better educate and share the knowledge they have acquired with others.

In her fourth year at USU, Shirley has helped the Family and Consumer Sciences Education (FCSE) program become very well known among the degrees offered within the College of Agriculture by offering students unique experiences utilizing online tools.

Shirley has created an eBook, blog and an educational website that includes sewing techniques and projects. The material includes tutorials and layouts for teachers to use in their own classrooms in order to better educate their students about FCSE.

“I am extremely honored to have received this award,” said Shirley. “I have had so many opportunities being involved in the School of Applied Sciences, Technology and Education at USU, but without my students, none of it would be possible.”

Shirley was nominated and eventually chosen for the award because of her dedication to not only USU, but also for her work as a mentor to high school students, teachers and individuals of all ages.
