The Western Athletic Conference announced its spring all-academic teams on Wednesday [June 20], along with its academic all-freshman/transfer teams, and Utah State [University] had 98 student-athletes recognized as 44 earned all-academic team honors, while 53 more were named to the academic all-freshman/transfer team.

Of its 44 academic all-WAC selections from its spring sports, Utah State had 18 student-athletes from women's outdoor track honored, along with 12 from men's outdoor track, five from women's tennis, four from both softball and men's tennis and one from the men's golf team.

Utah State's 44 academic honorees from its spring sports were the fourth-most in the league. Fresno State was first with 50, followed by New Mexico State (49), Idaho (45), USU (44), Hawai'i (38), Nevada (33), Louisiana Tech (28) and San Jose State (13).

Utah State also had the most individuals honored in women's outdoor track and field (26) and men's outdoor track and field (19), while women's tennis (6) and men's tennis (5) both tied for the second most, and men's golf finished third (4).

Senior cross country/track athletes Daniel Howell and Brian McKenna both earned academic all-WAC honors for the 11th time in their careers, while fellow senior cross country/track athletes Jessie Chugg also earned her 11th academic all-WAC honor. Of the 44 USU student-athletes to earn spring academic all-WAC honors, 31 are receiving the accolade for at least the second time.

To be eligible, a student-athlete must have completed one academic year, have at least a 3.0 cumulative grade-point average and have participated in at least 50 percent of the team's contests.

During the 2011-12 academic year, Utah State had 185 student-athletes recognized by the league office for their academic achievements.
