Former Aggie Lowry Joins the Utah State Soccer Coaching Staff

Alyssa Lowry was named USU soccer's assistant coach.

Utah State [University] head soccer coach Heather Cairns announced Monday [July 9] that former Aggie Alyssa Lowry has been named assistant coach.

The former defensive standout will complete the coaching staff for Coach Cairns along with associate head coach Trevor Wachsman and undergraduate assistant coach Molli Merrill. Both Merrill and Lowry earned all-Western Athletic Conference honors during their time in the Aggie uniform.

"Alyssa is one of our Aggie alumni greats who helped build the foundation that our program stands upon today,” Cairns said. “She served as team captain, earned all-WAC and NSCAA honors and led USU to its first WAC regular season title in her senior year. She was an amazing leader and a stellar defender for us."

Lowry will work with the historically tough Utah State defense as part of her coaching responsibilities. She will also handle alumni relations, team travel, video and scouting. She will also be crucial in dealing with Utah State soccer's social media.

As a player, she started every Aggie match her last three seasons. A ferocious defender, Lowry helped the Utah State defense become one of the best in the WAC on a consistent basis. Her senior season in 2008, she helped guide the Aggies to a perfect 7-0-0 WAC record. In 2008, USU also reached its first WAC Tournament title game.

As a junior, she scored her first career goal and first game-winning goal in the Aggies' 1-0 win against Montana. In four years at USU, she played in 71 matches, starting 66. She scored three goals, two of which were game-winning goals.

In the classroom, Lowry earned Academic all-WAC honors in 2007 and 2008. As a senior, she was named to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) all-West Scholar team.

Lowry earned her bachelor's degree in communications with an emphasis in public relations in 2009 and her master's degree in health and human movement with an emphasis in health education in 2012. She also worked in the Utah State marketing department in 2010.
