Utah State University's volleyball program received the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Team Academic Award for the 2011-12 season. The announcement was made Friday, July 20, by the AVCA.

Overall, a record 533 teams received the academic team award, including 102 NCAA Division I women's programs.

"We are pleased that we have earned the AVCA Academic team recognition this year for achieving and maintaining our team GPA. In 2008-09, we earned this award and our goal each year is to earn it again," said USU head coach Grayson DuBose. "Our team works hard on the court and in the classroom and we are appreciative of Amber Rae Childers for her dedication to our academic success and all the hard work by the USU Student-Athlete Services office. Utah State has committed the time and the resources to helping our team become true student-athletes."

During the 2011-12 academic year, Utah State's volleyball team had a 3.35 cumulative grade-point average, while 11 of its student-athletes received academic all-conference honors along with 12 earning USU Joe E. and Elma Whitesides Scholar-Athlete Awards.

This is the second time in the last four years that USU has earned the AVCA Team Academic Award after earning it for the 2008-09 season.

The AVCA Team Academic Award was initiated in 1993 to honor collegiate and high school volleyball teams that displayed excellence in the classroom during the academic year by maintaining at least a 3.30 cumulative team grade-point average on a 4.0 scale or a 4.10 cumulative team GPA on a 5.0 scale.

The USU volleyball team opens the 2012 season with the Blue-White Scrimmage Tuesday, Aug. 21, at 7 p.m. The Aggies will officially kick off the season by hosting the Utah State Invitational, sponsored by Gossner Foods, Aug. 24-25, welcoming in-state foes Utah, Southern Utah and Weber State, along with Portland.

Utah State volleyball tickets are available by contacting the USU Ticket Office at the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum or by phone by calling 1-888-USTATE-1 or (435) 797-0305.
