College of Agriculture Student Receives ASHS Scholarship Award

Cope, a senior majoring in plant science and biology at Utah State University, received the American Society for Horticultural Science Scholar Award at the annual conference July 31 in Miami, Fla.
Kevin Cope, a senior majoring in plant science and biology at Utah State University, received the American Society for Horticultural Science Scholar Award at the (ASHS) annual conference July 31 in Miami, Fla.
Throughout his education at USU, Cope has worked closely with Bruce Bugbee, professor of crop physiology; Larry Rupp, professor of ornamental horticulture and extension specialist as well as Daniel Drost, professor of horticulture and extension vegetable specialist, to further develop his research skills and techniques. Cope said it is because of the dedication and time spent with these three professors that he was able to get to where he is today.
“I really admire the College of Agriculture professors at USU,” said Cope. “They do everything they possibly can to help students increase their educational experience far beyond the classroom setting.”
Over the past year and a half, Cope has researched how different types of light-emitting diodes (LEDs) affect plant growth and development in order to determine which type of LEDs are best suited to growing plants on the International Space Station.
He also began another research project to develop a vegetative propagation protocol for the Utah juniper. By exposing stem cuttings taken from mature juniper plants to different environmental conditions and rooting hormone, he successfully propagated Utah juniper plants that have the potential of being used in drought tolerant landscapes.
“These research projects have provided me with so many opportunities,” said Cope. “I really enjoyed learning from these professors. The biggest thing I learned is that if you have a dream, just go for it. These opportunities will be something I will never forget, and I am honored to have received this award.”
