USU FACULTY ELECTED TO LEADERSHIP IN STATE ORGANIZATION

LOGAN — Two Utah State University faculty members have been elected to leadership positions in the Utah Music Educators Association (UMEA), the largest organization of public and private music educators in the state. Gregory Wheeler has been elected president, and Leslie Timmons has been elected vice president for elementary music education for the next two years.

“I’m very proud of Greg and Leslie for representing the Caine College of the Arts and Utah State University in such an outstanding way,” said Craig Jessop, dean of the Caine College of the Arts.

Wheeler, assistant professor of multiple woodwinds in the Department of Music, has taught for more than 30 years. He was recognized as teacher of the year in Cache School District three times and as junior high teacher of the year by UMEA.

“To be elected to this position is very humbling,” said Wheeler. “Music is an area irrefutably crucial to the academic growth of students in the educational process and I hope that as I share my background, talent and experience, I can serve and support music educators throughout the state.”

Timmons is an associate professor of flute and music education as well as a founding member of the faculty woodwind quintet Logan Canyon Winds. She is a part of Airfare, a flute-clarinet duo with faculty member Nicholas Morrison. In 1998 she was chosen by UMEA as Utah’s Outstanding Music Educator.

Utah Music Educators Association focused on providing every child in Utah schools an education that includes music, taught by a qualified educator. The organization works to improve current music programs and create opportunities for growth and development.
