Utah State University’s Dining Services head pastry chef Steven Wright competed recently at the annual Chocolate Festival, a fundraiser for Planned Parenthood Association and the Logan Health Center. Wright took second place honors in the professional category.

The popular annual event features competitors that include everyone from children to the talented home cook to professionals.

Wright has been with USU’s Dining Services only six months, but in that short time has made it a goal to make improvements at the Triple Beam Bakery. His co-workers said his creativity and love for cooking have given him the ability to share his talents through many avenues on campus and in the community.

For the chocolate festival, Wright created a chocolate gianduja tart. The tart included gianduja, a super-silky mix of Swiss chocolate and hazelnuts with a rich, deep flavor, he said. Paired with a pie-like crust and chocolate designs, Wright topped the creation off with candied cherries.

Wright said he was excited to compete with the Crumb Brothers pastry crew, the first place winner in the professional category with its white chocolate hazelnut cake with red berry surprise.
