Annual Braveheart Run to Benefit Local 5-year-old
Thursday, Apr. 11, 2013
Melanie Clawson, a 5-year-old from Cache County, is the beneficiary of the 2013 Braveheart Race.
Melanie Clawson is a 5-year-old from Cache Valley living with multiple health issues. She struggles with pervasive developmental disorder autism and a severe sensory disorder, which includes scoliosis, a heart murmur and suppressed immune system. Students from the Utah State University Detachment 860th Cadet Wing and the Arnold Air Society will host the third annual Braveheart Race April 20 to benefit the Clawson family.
The Braveheart race was established in 2011 as a service project by USU cadets to support members of the Cache Valley community. All proceeds help offset the healthcare costs for local families raising children with congenital birth defects and health disorders. In years past, the fundraiser has raised more than $7,000 to help alleviate financial pressures on these families. This year’s event aims to be bigger than ever.
Melanie’s life may be difficult at times, but she is a joy to her family, her mother Jessica Clawson said.
"She loves tractors and helping grandpa on the farm with the hay,” Clawson said. “She loves the very simple things that most people wouldn’t notice.”
The Braveheart Race will take place on the USU cross country training fields at 1400 N. 850 East April 20, 2013. The cost is $15 for the 5k and $20 for the 10k race. All proceeds from the fundraiser will be used to help alleviate the Clawson family’s financial needs. Registration will be held on the fields starting at 8 a.m. on race day. Packet pickup for those who registered early is the night before at the Military Science building from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
The race begins at 10 a.m. with a staggered start between the 5k and 10k racers. Information regarding parking for the event is forthcoming. Check the website to register online or to simply donate to the Clawson family. The Facebook page "Braveheart Race for Little Melanie" also contains information about the event.
