College of Science Recognizes Top Scholars

Utah State University’s College of Science hosted an awards ceremony and reception April 17 to recognize the college’s top scholars.
“Today we honor our students for their hard work and their achievements,” said Jim MacMahon, trustee professor and dean of the college. “We also honor our faculty and staff for their mentorship of students, excellence in research and their efforts in providing meaningful learning opportunities.”
Valedictorian for the college is Brian “B.J.” Sanders and Dean’s Scholar is Maria Goller. Sarah Mousley, who was named a 2012 Goldwater Scholar, is the college’s Scholar of the Year.
Joseph B. Jensen is Peak Prize Undergraduate Researcher of the Year and Curtis Steinfeldt was named Undergraduate Teaching Fellow of the Year.
Graduate Student (PhD) Researcher of the Year is Caleb Allpress and Graduate Student Teacher of the Year is Jeffrey Hazboun.
A-Pin recipients are Griffin Davis, Clarissa Fackrell, Jeffrey Frandsen, David Gage, Rebecca Hansen, Katelyn Heaton, Jacy Johnson, Meghan Kershner, Jenna Nelson, Evan Peterson, Danielle Phillips, Joseph Richardson, Taryn Rowe, Hannah Rush, Brian Sanders, Austin Spence, Jesse Spinner and Zachary Zabriskie.
College of Science student senator Bailee Binks was recognized for her service. Honored at the ceremony were fellow 2012-13 Science Council members, including 2013-14 senator-elect Kellie Erickson.
2012-13 College of Science Ambassadors Isaac Allred, Arthur Knight, Baley Kynaston, Bryant Loosle, Gilbert Nelson, Taryn Rowe, Brooke Siler, Clay Shumway and David Tate were also honored at the ceremony.
Receiving special recognition were 2013 Goldwater Scholars J. Tyler Gish and Jordan Rozum.
Recognized as Honors graduates were Melissa Andersen, Michael Buhler, Maria Goller, Colby Kearl, John Kidd, Sarah Mousley, Kyle Naylor, Lauren Page, Megan Paxton and Kristina Sorensen.
Undergraduates receiving scholarships, many established by the college’s alumni, donors, faculty and staff, were recognized at the campus gathering. Honorees include Isaac Allred, Demirie Andersen, Jacob Andersen, Alex Barker, Rhett Barton, Kade Bartschi, David Berg, Alexandria Campbell , Emily Frampton, Jeffrey Frandsen, Tanner Godfrey, Derrick Harkness, Katelyn Heaton, Scott Heiner, Camden Hunt, Weston Jenkins, Patricia Jensen, Jenna Jerez, Katelin Madsen, Kalie McCulloch, Tyler McKinnon, Jason Muelleck, Rachel Nydegger, Justin Oakeson, Melissa Ogilvie, Kim Rawlins, James Rohwer, Steven Roberts, Brooke Siler, Brianna Thomas, Tanner Tripp, Ryan Wallentine and Jaylee Willis.
Graduate fellowships and scholarships went to Upendra Adhikari, Caleb Allpress, Erica Christensen, Jeffrey Hazboun, Matthew Lewis and Kathryn Weglarz.
Undergraduate Research Mentor of the Year is Michelle Baker and Faculty Researcher of the Year is Nathan Geer. Faculty Teacher of the Year is Frank Messina and Faculty Advisor of the Year is Dan Coster.
Faculty member Shane Larson was honored as a founding chair of Science Unwrapped, the college’s public educational outreach program.
Staff member Shawna Johnson received special recognition for 35 years of service. Andy Anderson, Jim Cangelosi, Rand Hooper and Richard Mueller were honored for 30 years of service.
Also recognized at the ceremony were Ted Evans, Nancy Kay Harrison, Sharon Pappas, Vincent Wickwar and Kathryn Turner for 25 years of service.
The College of Science includes the academic departments of Biology, Chemistry and Biochemistry, Mathematics and Statistics, Geology and Physics.
