Interior Designer Colum McCartan to Speak at USU
Wednesday, Nov. 27, 2013
One of the leading designers in boutique lifestyle hotels in the United States, Colum McCartan, will speak at the Performance Hall on Utah State University’s campus at 5:30 p.m. Dec. 5. The appearance is hosted by the Interior Design Program in the Department of Art and Design and the Caine College of the Arts.
McCartan is the founder of MCCARTAN, an award-winning design company based in New York City. The firm’s portfolio covers everything from resorts to healthcare, including the Eventi Hotel in New York and Hotel Vitale in San Francisco.
Darrin Brooks, associate professor of interior design in the Caine College of the Arts, said he chose McCartan as a speaker because of the quality and distinction of the hotels he designs.
“McCartan will bring an international influence and unique perspective to Utah State University,” said Brooks.
McCartan was born and raised in Ireland where he trained in interior design at the College of Art and Design in Belfast. He founded his first design company in Northern Ireland shortly after graduating, and focused on interiors for restaurants, hotels, nightclubs and bars.
In 1993 McCartan joined Sir Terence Conran’s design partnership in London and began working on a diverse range of projects from Conran Restaurants to cruise ship interiors. While still in London, he became a founding member of the renowned United Designers.
In 1995, McCartan took his extensive portfolio to San Francisco and developed a reputation for his innovative designs by working on the Hotel Metropolis and Le Parker Meridien in New York. He opened his New York office in 2003.
“The feedback McCartan will give to interior design students from a hospitality perspective is invaluable,” said Brooks. “Students will take away a more diverse and unique understanding of the world of design.”
The lecture is free and open to the public.
