Utah State [University] softball has its bags packed and is ready to head south to open its 2014 campaign. USU will travel to St. George, Utah, to play in the Red Desert Classic at the Canyons Complex, which features 11 teams from around the country. The Aggies will play six games in four days.

Utah State gets the season underway against a familiar foe in Southern Utah on Thursday, Feb. 6, at 2 p.m. The Aggies will close out the first day of the season against border-foe Idaho State at 4 p.m. This is the first of three meeting against the Bengals this season.

USU will have only one game on Friday against Grand Canyon, which is now a member of the Aggies' former conference, the Western Athletic Conference. First pitch is set for 4 p.m. against the Lopes. On Saturday, Utah State will take on East Carolina at 11 a.m. before taking on former WAC rival UT Arlington at 1:30 p.m. The Aggies will conclude the tournament against Omaha on Sunday, Feb. 9, at 1:30 p.m.

The Aggies welcome back junior outfielder Hailey Froton as the top offensive returner. Last season, Froton was second on the team in hitting with a .304 batting average. She was also first in triples with five and second in RBI with 18. Junior third baseman Nicole Arata led the team with 20 RBI.

In the circle, USU lost two seniors in Mandy Harmon and Shelbi Tyteca who were four-year starters. Sophomore Noelle Johnson will be the leader in the circle this season. Johnson led the team in strikeouts last season with 127. She ended the season with a 3-17 record with 32 appearances.
