Aggie Blue Bikes — also known on campus as ABB — recently hired Wayne Elder to be Utah State University’s first ever bicycle education coordinator.

In recent years, and as cycling continues to grow on the USU campus, a need for a bicycle education coordinator has become apparent, according to Stephanie Tomlin, Blue Bikes program coordinator. With proper education, cycling is a safe, healthy form of transportation that can help improve the air quality in Cache Valley, Tomlin said.

“Through the new position, Elder will enable ABB to more holistically pursue its mission to promote safe cycling on the USU campus and throughout the Cache Valley community,” Tomlin said. “The new program will work to create, implement, promote and track a more robust bicycle education program through existing and new outlets at Utah State University and Aggie Blue Bikes.”

The bicycle education coordinator will also work to create and implement a bicycle education pilot program at an elementary school in Cache Valley and track its achievements.

“Wayne’s two key objectives for the university are to promote bicycling to the university population and to teach those same people safe bicycling skills,” Tomlin said.

A number of courses will be offered to USU students and faculty, including traffic skills (101 and 201), traffic skills for commuters, cycling skills for parents, bicycling skills 1-2-3, safe routes to school, traffic skills for motorists and family bicycling.

According to Tomlin, Elder is an avid bicyclist and bicycling advocate.  He is a member of the League of American Bicyclists and is one of the league’s certified bicycling instructors. He is also a member of Logan’s Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee.

Aggie Blue Bikes is a program within the Center for Civic Engagement and Service Learning, a part of USU’s Student Services division. Aggie Blue Bikes’ mission is to add to the vibrancy of the USU campus community that Student Services promotes through bicycle lending, education and advocacy.
