Utah State's [University] men and women's track and field teams will compete in the 2014 Mountain West Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships at the Cadet Field House in Colorado Springs, Colo., Thursday through Saturday, Feb. 27-March 1. It is the first Mountain West Indoor Championships meet for the Aggies after joining the conference this season.
In their final Western Athletic Conference Indoor Championships last season, the USU men placed third, while the Aggie women finished in seventh-place. Over the three-day championships, Utah State garnered 16 first-team all-WAC and 16 second-team all-WAC performances.
“We’re going into the conference championships about as healthy as we’ve been all year and I have some high expectations for individuals on both the men’s and the women’s side,” said Aggie veteran head coach Gregg Gensel. “We’re really looking forward to our first indoor track championship in the Mountain West Conference.”
Action for the championships begins Thursday at 11 a.m. (MT) with the women’s pentathlon and finishes with four of the seven events in the men’s heptathlon, beginning at 11:15 a.m. On Friday, the men conclude the heptathlon beginning at 11 a.m. The first field event finals start at 12:30 p.m. Friday with the women’s weight throw, and concludes with the men’s weight throw at 3:30 p.m. The track finals start at 1:30 p.m. with the women’s mile and will finish with the men’s distance medley at 6 p.m. Saturday’s field action will kick off with the men’s shot put at 10 a.m. and will run through the men’s triple jump at 1 p.m. The running events will resume with the women’s mile at noon and the championships will wrap up with the men’s 4x400m relay race at 2:45 p.m. An awards ceremony takes place at the conclusion of the meet.
The Aggies return six athletes with WAC Indoor Championships titles. Senior Bryce Hall won the weight throw in 2012 and the distance medley team (including sophomore Briton Page, junior Eric Shellhorn and senior Kalon Weston) finished first last season. Page also won the 800m title in route to being named the WAC Freshman of the Year in 2013. Junior Nic Bowens and senior Silas Pimentel also won Freshman of the Year honors in 2012 and 2008, respectively. For the USU women, senior Kylie Ross was part of the 4x400m relay team that placed first in 2012, while fellow senior Alex Litzsinger won a title as part of the distance medley team in 2010.
