Utah State University senior lecturer Julie Wheeler has been named 2014’s Post Secondary Family and Consumer Sciences Educator of the Year. Wheeler, a teacher in the School of Applied Sciences, Technology and Education, said she works hard to ensure all students understand her lessons.

“The most important part of teaching is making sure your students can perform the skills you are teaching them,” Wheeler said. “Giving real-life assignments that they can use immediately will change their lives and their futures.”

The Utah Association for Career and Technical Education (UACTE) nominated and selected Wheeler for the award. In addition to the honors, Wheeler was also presented with a plaque at the UACTE February conference.

Wheeler, who has been teaching family and consumer sciences education at USU since 1997, said it’s important to remember that great teaching must involve the students.

“Teaching is not a play where the teacher reigns over the students and imparts of his/her wisdom,” Wheeler said. “A good teacher is a facilitator of learning.”

According to her students, Wheeler’s dedication is obvious in her teaching.

“She wants to know how to help us and then she works diligently to ensure that we are getting the education we are in school for,” said Jessica Kunzler, a senior in FCSE. “Julie has told everyone in the program that she is our advocate and she will be our cheerleader when we need it.”

Wheeler currently teaches three classes and oversees student internships. In addition to her responsibilities at USU, Wheeler also presents at multiple workshops and conferences each year.

After 18 years of teaching, Wheeler said good teachers have the ability to change the future.

“My favorite part of teaching is planning and preparing lessons that will impact the lives of my students,” Wheeler said. “We teach to change lives and make the world a better place.”
