Utah State Heads to Tucson for 2014 Mountain West Golf Championships

Utah State’s [University] men’s golf team travels to Tucson, Ariz., this weekend to compete in the 2014 Mountain West Championship set to begin Friday, April 25.
All 11 Mountain West teams will play a total of 54 holes during the three-day tournament with the first round scheduled to begin at 7 a.m. (PT). The tournament, which runs through Sunday, April 27, will be played on the par 71, 7,144-yard Catalina Course at Omni Tucson National Resort.
Utah State, paired with Boise State and Wyoming, will be the last three teams to tee off beginning at 9:30 a.m. (PT).
New Mexico won the 2013 Mountain West Championship with an 8-under 844 (282-281-281), while UNLV's Kevin Penner took medalist honors with a 7-under 206 (67-72-67).
On the season, Utah State has competed in 10 tournaments and has recorded seven top-10 finishes, including five top-five places, including tying for second at the Utah Invitational last fall. This spring, USU has two top-five finishes as it tied for fourth at the Southern Utah hosted Pat Hicks Thunderbird Invitational and finished fourth at the South Dakota State hosted Jackrabbit Invitational held in Primm, Nev. In its last competition, USU finished seventh at the UC Santa Barbara Invitational.
Jeon leads Utah State with a stroke average of 72.07 over 29 rounds this year, while Higham has a stroke average of 72.86 over 29 rounds. Schmaltz has a stroke average of 76.00 over 24 rounds, Miller has a stroke average of 75.60 over 20 rounds, and Platke has a stroke average of 78.00 over 14 rounds.
At last year’s Western Athletic Conference Championships, Utah State finished in sixth-place as Higham tied for 11th individually, Jeon finished 19th, and Platke tied for 23rd. In 2012, Higham tied for eighth-place at the WAC Championships, and in 2010 Higham finished 42nd.
