USU Extension Book Answers Organic Gardening Questions

Thursday, May. 08, 2014

the cover for USU Extension's Organic Gardening Guide

How do I control garden pests organically? What companion plants grow best together? What is the best soil mix to fill a raised-bed garden box? How do I create a habitat for beneficial insects?

These and many other organic gardening questions are answered in the book “A Guide to Common Organic Gardening Questions — Step-by-Step Recommendations for Organic Vegetable and Fruit Gardening in Utah.”

The USU Extension publication includes instructions on garden preparation, organic gardening techniques, variety selection, garden layout and planting, and garden pest control. It also includes information on garden soil improvement, pruning fruit, garden irrigation and weed management. The information is presented in a simple format, and the book provides a list of additional publications for further details.

A Guide to Common Organic Gardening Questions” includes information on many types of growing practices that have been proven effective in Utah through research and demonstration work conducted by USU Extension. The 307-page book was written by USU Extension faculty members Katie Wagner, USU horticulture assistant professor in Salt Lake County; Shawn Olsen, USU agricultural professor in Davis County; Dan Drost, state vegetable specialist; and 15 other state specialists and county faculty from USU Extension and the University of Kentucky.

The book is available for purchase at USU Extension offices in Farmington and Salt Lake City and online.
