USU Extension Sponsors Sewing Day Camp

SALT LAKE CITY - Utah State University Extension in Salt Lake County presents “Savvy Sewing Day Camp, for beginners,” held July 10 and 11 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Salt Lake County Government Center, 2001 South State Street, South Building, Room S-1010.

The day camp is geared toward youth ages 9 to 18 and will provide basic sewing education. The day camp will teach fundamentals of sewing through hands-on learning.

“By attending this camp, youth will develop an understanding of basic sewing knowledge such as how to use a sewing machine, the basic tools of sewing and how the choice of fabric is important to specific projects,” said Shayna Savage, USU Extension family and consumer sciences intern. “This camp will be a fun environment for gaining sewing skills as games are played to help keep learning exciting.”

Savage will teach the class along with Marilyn Albertson, USU Extension family and consumer sciences associate professor. Over the two-day course, youth will create a drawstring bag to display their newly gained skills.

Youth who register for the day camp will also be enrolled in 4-H though September. With a 4-H membership, youth can enter their sewing item in the Salt Lake County Fair held Aug. 6 to 9, 2014. Cost for the two-day camp is $20 per person and includes 4-H summer membership.
