The Mountain West Conference announced its spring all-academic teams Monday [July 7, 2014] and Utah State had 99 student-athletes recognized as part of a league-record 897 student-athletes who were honored.

Spring sports include baseball, men and women’s basketball, men and women’s golf, softball, women’s swimming and diving, men and women’s tennis and men and women’s indoor and outdoor track and field.

Of its 99 academic all-Mountain West selections from its spring sports, Utah State had 37 student-athletes from women's track honored, along with 28 from men's track, nine from softball, six from both women’s basketball and men’s golf, five from women’s tennis and four each from men’s basketball and men’s tennis.

Utah State’s 99 academic honorees from its spring sports were the third-most in the league. New Mexico led the conference with 124 all-academic recipients, while Colorado State had 101 and USU had 99.  Boise State was fourth with 90 all-academic honors from its spring sports, followed by Fresno State (86), Nevada (79), UNLV (78), Air Force (69), San Diego State (58), Wyoming (58) and San Jose State (53).

Utah State also had the most individuals honored in women’s track and field (37) and men’s track and field (28), and men’s golf (6) was tied for the most, while men’s basketball finished tied for the second-most honorees (4).

Senior Kyle McKenna, who competes in cross country and both indoor and outdoor track for Utah State, has now earned academic all-conference honors 10 times in his career. Junior cross country/track athletes Brittany Bushman and Eric Shellhorn have now both earned academic all-conference honors eight times, while senior track athletes Keeley Eldredge, Kylie Ross and Bailee Whitworth all earned their seventh academic all-conference honor. Junior volleyball/track athlete Rachel Orr also earned her seventh academic all-conference honor this spring, including her fourth in track, and junior cross country/track athlete Chris Martinez earned his sixth academic all-conference honor this spring.

Of the 99 USU student-athletes to earn spring academic all-Mountain West honors, 71 are receiving the accolade for at least the second time.

To be eligible, a student-athlete must have completed one academic year, have at least a 3.0 cumulative grade-point average and have participated in at least 50 percent of the team’s contests.

During the 2013-14 academic year, Utah State had a total of 160 student-athletes earn academic all-Mountain West honors.
