KICKING OFF — Utah State [University] opens the home portion of the 2014 season Sunday, Aug. 31, against Omaha in its only match of the week. The Aggies got off to a rough start last week with road losses to No. 23 Arkansas (3-1) and Missouri State (2-0).
Sunday’s action begins at Chuck and Gloria Bell Soccer Field at 1 p.m. Utah State is currently 0-2-0, while Omaha is 1-0-0 after the first week of the season.
WATCH AND WATCH AGAIN — Once again, all home matches will be streamed in conjunction with the Mountain West Network live at http://www.utahstateaggies.com/videos/. This season, if a match is missed, fans can watch matches on demand as well at http://www.utahstateaggies.com/videos/.
FRIENDLY CONFINES — Utah State has been solid in its home opener, winning its last six. Overall, the Aggies are 11-6 in their openers at Chuck and Gloria Bell Soccer Field. Last season, USU shut down Creighton, 3-0. Jayne Robison, Kylie Dibb and Jessica Brooksby scored for Utah State.
SERIES HISTORY vs. OMAHA — The Aggies and the Mavs have met only once, meeting in Omaha in 2012. In that match, Utah State captured the 3-1 win. In that match, forward Danielle Gaztambide scored her first collegiate goal in the win, while former Aggie Mari Miyashiro netted the other two goals for USU.
The Mavs started the season with a 2-0 win over Incarnate Word. Chelsi Rohloff and Lydia Holtmann provided the offense for Omaha, as it improved to 1-0-0.
SLOW START — This is the first time since the 2005 season that the Aggies have started the season 0-5-1. That season USU had losses to Gonzaga and UNLV along with a tie to Southern Utah to start the season. The 2007 season was the last time that the Aggies began the season with two-straight road matches. In that season, Utah State started the season on the road against Texas State and TCU.
ROOKIES RULING THE ROOST — Utah State had several freshman see time on the pitch so far this young season. In the first two matches, five different freshmen saw action. Freshmen defender Rachelle Warner started both matches for the Aggie defense. Freshman forward Wesley Hamblin also started both matches. Midfielder/defender Bailee Hammond and midfielder/defender Danielle Nowers saw time in both matches, while midfielder/defender Erin Rickenbach played in the match against Missouri State. Sophomore midfielder Katie Flynn also saw her first time in an Aggie uniform after red-shirting last season. Flynn played in both matches and started the match against Missouri State on Aug. 24.
