Newspapers and Magazines in the Community Newspapers are a great resource for researchers; however, be aware that you can't believe everything you read in a paper. From day to day, the facts may change, so you will need to read several articles in sequence to piece together the actual facts. Most large newspapers have wonderful on-line search engines, so that you can search their archives without having to travel to the newspaper office. Most smaller newspapers will keep archives of past issues at their office and will allow people to use them for research. Call the editor to make an appointment to use their newspaper archives.
Regional magazines such as Blue Mountain Shadows, may also have local historical and scientific information you can use. Many County Historical Societies also publish magazines. Check the local library to see what publications may be printed locally.
Most counties have at least one newspaper. Here are some of the publications in San Juan County, Utah
| Blue Mountain Panorama | San Juan Record | Blue Mountain Shadows |
San Juan Record
Bound copies of the San Juan Record have been donated to the county libraries in both Blanding and Monticello. Unless you know the year that some event happened these will be time consuming to search through. Microfilm copies of the paper from 1933-1984 are located at the LDS Family History Center, and Edge of the Cedars Museum.
Blue Mountain Panorama
This Blanding weekly contains excellent photographs and accounts of local sporting events, and news. They have donated bound volumes to the library each year since1994.
Blue Mountain Shadows
This regional magazine has been published since 1986 and contains both history and folklore of the Four Corners region. Some articles have been posted on line. A web site for the magazine will be created in 2001. Both San Juan County libraries, as well as San Juan County high school libraries have copies of the magazine in their collections.
