 For Immediate Release:

Utah Grazing Lands Conservation Initiative (GLCI) is a coalition of producers, producer organizations, conservation district officials, federal and state agency personnel, extension specialists and researchers united in an effort to improve private grazing lands in Utah. The GLCI was organized in the early 1990's when it was recognized that a coordination of existing programs, personnel, and resources would be a benefit to private grazing land (range or pasture) in Utah.

The Utah GLCI's mission is to encourage private landowners/managers to improve their grazing lands, coordinate technical and financial assistance programs for private landowners, educate private landowners and the public at large about the benefits of well managed and healthy grazing lands, and to promote long term research and demonstration programs to improve Utah grazing lands.

The state level GLCI coalition has a budget for FY 1999 of over $42,000 to promote the health of grazing lands in Utah. This money will be used to help fund demonstration projects, tours of successful grazing projects, educational displays and materials, and to produce an Internet Home Page to provide the latest in grazing lands information, educational opportunities, and upcoming activities. Proposals for grazing land improvement demonstration projects are being requested.

Utah's state level GLCI Steering Committee is comprised of representatives from USU Extension, Utah Association of Conservation Districts, Utah Farm Bureau, Utah Cattlemen's Association, Utah Woolgrowers' Association, Utah Farmer's Union, Utah Department of Agriculture and Food, Utah Section of the Society for Range Management, Utah Dairymen's Association, Utah Division of Wildlife Resources, USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service, and private landowners. County, or multi-county, GLCI organizations are encouraged.
