44th WLA Conference THEME: HIGH PLAINS DRIFTING
Below, you'll find the latest
conference information. More info will be posted as it becomes
available. Check back frequently. Hotel: Our headquarters will be the Spearfish Holiday Inn Convention Center, Exit 14, outside of Spearfish and only 3 miles west of Deadwood. Transportation: Rapid City Airport, approximately 55 miles from Spearfish. Shuttles available every 15 - 20 minutes each way. Conference Program (in progress): There will be plenaries on the following topics:
Under the direction of David Fenimore, the Readers Theater will perform a parody of Deadwood. (Were you expecting anything less????) The performance will take place in Spearfish's historic Matthews Opera House. Don’t miss this! The field trip will consist of a trip up beautiful Spearfish Canyon and culminate in a visit to Lead-Deadwood. (More info on historic Deadwood to be found here.) Louis Owens Awards/Graduate Student Support for Conference Attendance: Graduate students may qualify for support from the WLA to help with costs associated with WLA Conference attendance. The current guidelines and application form for 2009 will be posted closer to the conference. NOTE: You must be a member of the Western Literature Association to present at the conference. If your proposal is accepted and you are not a member already, you can either join by clicking on ONLINE SERVICES in the right-hand column or you can join when you pay for registration.
