David Rich Lewis

A native of northern Utah, David Rich Lewis received his B.S. from Utah State University (1979), a M.A. from the University of Toronto (1980), and a M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin-Madison (1983, 1988) where he worked with Allan G. Bogue.  As a graduate student he received the Bert M. Fireman Award from the Western History Association (1984), a Pre-Doctoral Fellowship from the D'Arcy McNickle Center for the History of the American Indian at The Newberry Library in Chicago (1985-86), and a Research Fellowship from the American West Center, University of Utah (1986-87) where he worked with Floyd A. O'Neil. 

Lewis returned to Utah State University in 1988 and is currently a full Professor in the Department of History, teaching courses in Native American ethnohistory, Utah history, the American history survey, and graduate seminars in American Indian, environmental, rural, and western history.  Lewis is the author of numerous scholarly articles, chapters, and popular history essays, as well as Neither Wolf Nor Dog: American Indians, Environment, and Agrarian Change (New York: Oxford University Press, 1994).  He, along with former WHQ editors Clyde A. Milner II and Anne M. Butler, edited Major Problems in the History of the American West, 2d edition (Boston: Houghton Mifflin Co., 1997), and with Michael Harkin edited Native Americans and the Environment: Perspectives on the Ecological Indian (Lincoln: University of Nebraska Press, 2007).   Lewis joined the staff of the WHQ in 1992, and is currently Editor.
