HISTORY/PURPOSE:

The first recognition program was held in 1986. Recognizing the different achievements and the important roles local women play in society is a primary purpose of honoring women over 65 years of age.

History often only records information about women who were too powerful, too wicked, or too troublesome to be ignored. Additionally, many of women’s achievements are not included in history or recognized by others.

It is important that women’s contributions are passed on to future generations. The age designation is important, because it counters society’s emphasis on youth in America and educates that people live very active and productive lives in “later” years. Also, as a lifetime achievement award, it allows us to celebrate each women’s life and her contribution to the community and society.

Since 1986 over 90 women have been honored with this award.
