About us
WGS is an interdisciplinary program and USU’s primary home for academic programming focusing on gender and diversity. The WGS program is unique at USU in assisting male and female students, white students and students of color, heterosexual and sexual minorities, to understand the roles that gender plays in the world and in their careers and lives. Students engage in the study of masculinity and femininity and the social forces that construct these identities, understanding the way in which class, race/ethnicity, gender and sexuality intersect to shape life chances, and the impact of globalization on gender roles and identities in developing countries.

Each semester, WGS courses are taught by faculty members from departments throughout the university. For example, ANTH 5100: Anthology of Sex & Gender, examines how social roles for women and men are defined in different cultures and how these various cultural expectations for women and men help define that society. BIOL 4759/6750 examines the experiences of women in the sciences. JCOM/WGS 4410/6410: Gender & Mass Media gives students the opportunity to investigate how women, men and sexual minorities are represented in several different types of media, such as how sports media cover male and female athletics. And SOC 3010: Race, Class & Gender, explores how racial, class, and gender differences influence each of our lives.

Regardless of your career goals, a Women & Gender Studies minor or area studies certificate is an asset for employment after you graduate. In any career, an understanding of how gender affects both our perceptions and expectations of others is invaluable for all students, female and male. USU Women & Gender Studies’ graduates are currently working in a variety of settings, including newspapers, counseling, legal firms, public relations, politics, social service agencies such as battered women’s shelters and rape crisis centers, and in international venues such as the Peace Corps; others go on to graduate study.

Check out this recent article in Ms. Magazine, in which author Nikki Anyanna Stewart writes that a WGS degree provides you with the knowledge and skills to “transform the world.”

Come find out how you can reinvent your perspectives and transform the world with Women & Gender Studies.
