Requirements
- At least 50 percent of the course material addresses women/gender issues.
- Course content is informed by contemporary feminist and/or gender scholarship that recognizes women’s roles and contributions to society and the diversity of women’s experiences. In addition to courses that focus on women and women’s issues, we are especially interested in courses that explore masculinity studies and queer studies.
- Course content reflects sensitivity to the ways in which race and ethnicity, class, sexual identity, and cultural context intersect with and shape our experiences of gender. The course explicates rather than marginalizes these differences.
- Course design, content and methods of teaching and learning equip students to examine gender critically, exploring ways in which societal systems constrain and marginalize women, sexual minorities and people of color.
- Although pedagogical style is not a criterion for our Women & Gender Studies courses, we encourage teaching methods that facilitate active student participation and learning consistent with feminist and gender pedagogy.
- Include any additional information, such as prerequisites. Since the Women & Gender Studies Program is interdisciplinary, we encourage courses that do not carry departmental prerequisites, as this tends to exclude students from other majors.
