GOALS OF THE DEPARTMENT OF HISTORY
HISTORY MAJOR
1. To train undergraduates to research, analyze, synthesize, and communicate accurate conclusions about change over time by using the historical method.
2. To prepare History majors to succeed in history-related fields of endeavor such as museum curation, archival curation, heritage tourism, cultural resource management, or any other field that requires information retrieval and analysis skills.
3. To inculcate cultural literacy by giving students a
broad familiarity with the past.
HISTORY TEACHING MAJOR
1. To train undergraduates to research, analyze, synthesize, and communicate accurate conclusions about change over time by using the historical method.
2. To prepare students to teach history by giving them appropriate content knowledge for teaching the Utah Core Curriculum.
3. To prepare students to teach history by introducing and modeling appropriate pedagogies.
4. To inculcate cultural literacy by giving students a broad familiarity with the past.
CLASSICS PROGRAM
1. To give students a strong foundation in the Latin and Ancient Greek languages.
2. To read and comprehend major authors who wrote in Latin and Ancient Greek.
3. To instill cultural literacy about the classical civilizations of the Mediterranean.
4. To train undergraduates to research, analyze, synthesize, and communicate accurate conclusions about change over time by using the historical method.
