Profile This fall "Dr. Jay" is starting his 45th year of teaching!! Like many scholars trained in the field of Folklore and Folklife, he combines an appreciation of all things North American with an interest in cultures overseas. In addition to earning degrees from Hamilton College (B.A.) and the University of Pennsylvania (M.A., Ph.D.), Dr. Anderson studied at both the University of Aberdeen in Scotland and the University of East Africa. These experiences have lent an international perspective to all aspects of his work. Among the subjects that fascinate him are Folk Foodways, Ethnic Films, and Cultural Tourism.
Dr. Anderson is the author of thirty articles and ten books and published reports. Perhaps his most famous work is Time Machines: The World of Living History (1983). Between 1985 and 1993, Dr. Anderson directed a graduate program in outdoor museum work at the Ronald V. Jensen Historical Farm in Cache Valley. Now he devotes his energies to doing a first-rate job in the classroom. All Jay's courses are about American and European cultures and he uses documentary and feature films in every course. In 1998, he received the Humanist of the Year Award from the College of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences. |
