The Society for Range Management is the professional scientific society and conservation organization whose members are concerned with studying, conserving, managing and sustaining the varied resources of the rangelands which comprise nearly half the land in the world. Established in 1948, SRM has 4,000 members in 48 coutries, including many developing nations.
SRM's members are land managers, scientists, students, producers and conservationists -- a diverse membership guided by a professional code of ethics and unified by a strong land ethic.
The mission of the Society for Range Management is to promote and enhance the stewardship of rangelands to meet human needs based on science and sound policy.
Membership in the Society for Range Management is open to anyone engaged in or interested in any aspect of the study, management, or use of rangelands.
Objectives of the Society
- To properly take care for the basic rangeland resources of soil, plants, and water;
- To develop an understanding of range ecosystems and of the principles applicable to the management of range resources;
- To assist all who work with range resources to keep abreast of new findings and techniques in the science and art of range management;
- To improve the effectiveness of range management to obtain from range resources the products and values necessary for man's welfare;
- To create a public appreciation of the economic and social benefits to be obtained from the range environment;
- To promote professional development of its members.
Code of Ethics
- foster an environment where all people are encouraged to participate in the Society and the management and enjoyment of rangelands;
- use his/her knowledge, skills and training when appropriate to find ways to harmonize people's needs, demands, and actions with the maintenance and enhancement of natural and managed rangeland ecosystems;
- promote competence in the field of range management by supporting high standards of education, employment, and performance;
- manage or perform services consistent with the highest standards of quality, integrity, and with respect for the rangeland plant and animal resources, the employer, and the public; soil, water, air;
- disseminate information to promote understanding of, and appreciation for, values of rangelands to those with a direct involvement in range management, and to the general public as well;
- offer professional advice only on those rangeland issues in which they are informed and qualified through professional training and experience;
- in any communication, give full and proper credit to, and avoid misinterpretation of, the work, ideas, and achievements of others; and
- encourage the use of sound biological information in management decisions.
SRM Sections
SRM currently has 21 Sections whose purpose and function is to bring about through regularly scheduled meetings, tours, or other means:
- a closer personal acquaintace among members of the Society;
- an increased spirit of cooperation on matters relating to Society objectives;
- the encouragement of members to participate in both Section and Society functions;
- to study and observe local range and range-related situations;
- to work with other sections or with other local organizations on matters of common interest and concern; and
- to confer on Society affairs
