Creating Accessible Lists in Canvas

Lists are a helpful and intuitive way to order content. They can be ordered or unordered. Ordered lists are appropriate for when your content has an intentional order, where some items must follow others. Unordered lists, on the other hand, are good when your content has no specific order.

Making a List in a Canvas Page

Lists are simple to create in the Canvas page editor. Click the arrow next to the “List” button on the toolbar to select the list style you want. Then start writing your content!

When you want a new list item, press the “Enter” key on your keyboard. To start a sublist, either press the “Tab” key on your keyboard or click the “Increase / Decrease Indent” button in the Canvas page editor toolbar.

Using Different List Styles

You can also have list styles differ between lists and their sub-lists.

For example, if you wanted the assignment section of our example to be in an ordered list:

  1. Highlight any word in the section of the items you wish to change.
  2. In the Canvas page editor toolbar, select the desired ordered list style from the menu.
  3. Only the highlighted list will change to the selected style.
