Transfer Admission Information

Required Materials
  • Application
  • $50 nonrefundable application fee (nonresidents only)
  • All official college transcripts
  • If you have less than 24 post-high school credits:
    • High school transcript or GED
    • Official ACT or SAT scores (optional)

Academic Requirements

Applicants must meet the minimum GPA requirement for their desired major. Applicants whose GPA does not meet the requirements of their desired major may be offered an "Exploratory" major if they have at least a 2.0 GPA and fewer than 60 transfer credits. If the academic work does not meet this standard, applications will be considered on an individual basis.

Transferring Credit

USU accepts credit from any regionally accredited institution and will try to match credits with courses at USU. The process of finding a course-to-course equivalent is called articulation. If no course match is found, you will receive elective credit for your previous course work. View our course-by-course articulation.

Students who transfer to USU and have an Associate of Arts or an Associate of Science degree (or have completed the General Education requirements) from a regionally-accredited institution may be deemed as having satisfied the General Education portion of the University Studies requirements. However, Utah State University will require students to satisfy the Breadth American Institutions requirement, as well as any deficiencies in Communications Literacy, Quantitative Literacy, and the Depth Education requirements. Check the US DOE website for regionally accredited institutions.

Official College Transcripts

Applicants are required to submit official transcripts from ALL colleges attended. Transcripts are considered official when the transcript remains in the sealed envelope issued by the transferring institution. Transcripts can be forwarded or hand delivered to USU as long as the transcript remains in the original sealed envelope. Also, electronic transcripts are accepted as being official from participating institutions, however, faxed transcripts will not be accepted. Electronic transcripts can be emailed to transcripts@usu.edu.

Applicants must submit transcripts from ALL previously attended institutions. USU is not able to take credits from another institution on another college's transcript. For example: USU is not able to recognize Snow College coursework on a SUU transcript. USU must receive official transcripts from both institutions in order to complete the application and to ensure that your credits transfer over correctly.

Non-Degree Admission Information

Admission Requirements
  • Application
    • Official transcripts from previous schools are NOT required for non-degree seeking admission. We recommend that non-degree seeking applicants do not submit them.

Restrictions

While the application is quick and free, non-degree seeking students do have certain restrictions to be aware of. These restrictions are lifted when the student is formally accepted into a degree-seeking program at USU.

Here are some examples of restrictions for non-degree seeking students:

  • Students generally will NOT be allowed to use Federal Student Aid.
  • Students enrolling in graduate courses, for the purpose of using them toward a graduate degree, may only use a maximum of 12 non-degree seeking credits, which also must be approved by the graduate program.
  • Students wanting to take English Language Only courses must complete the first-year or transfer student application.
  • Credits from previous schools will NOT be posted to a student’s USU transcript until they have been formally accepted into a degree program at USU.
    • If any of those prior credits fulfill a prerequisite for a course at USU, it is recommended that the student submit a Prerequisite Override Request using the Registration Options Form and/or contact the course advisor.

Residency Requirements

Residency Requirements

Residents of Utah pay a different tuition rate than nonresidents. Generally speaking, if you have lived in Utah for the last 12 months and graduated from a Utah high school, you will be considered a resident for tuition purposes. It can get a bit more complicated than that so use our residency calculator below or read our residency policy to see the details about how to apply as a Utah resident. Please note, this tool is not an official way to determine residency. If you need something official, apply or contact us.
