Elizabeth R. Cantwell Named 17th USU President |
The Utah Board of Higher Education selected Elizabeth “Betsy” R. Cantwell as the 17th president of Utah State University on Friday, May 19, following an extensive national search. |
Cantwell will assume the position later this summer. She succeeds Noelle E. Cockett, who served as president beginning January 2017 and will step down June 2023. |

New USU Building to Honor Support of Kem and Carolyn Gardner for Learning by Doing |
The building, funded largely through private philanthropic support, is part of a campaign to provide experiential learning opportunities for all Jon M. Huntsman School of Business students. The 45,000-square-foot, $30 million building will house Huntsman’s expanding experiential learning programs and create room for new hands-on learning initiatives. It will also include professional co-working space for student use,remote internships and other needs. |

Reeling It In: USU Graduate Tyler Coleman on Making an Education Matter |
The pursuit of a degree started as a sort of “side quest” for USU graduate Tyler Coleman. He had traveled to Utah with a friend for the fishing after his wife mentioned wanting to move west to be closer to public lands and mountains. |
Signing up for a degree program at USU seemed as good a reason as any. It wasn’t until after he committed to the fisheries and aquatic sciences program in the Quinney College of Natural Resources that he realized just what a serendipitous circumstance he’d fallen into. |

Iconic Idaho Drive-In, The Polar Bear, Returning After 18 Years |
The Polar Bear, which first opened in the 1950s, closed in 2005. USU alum Sawyer Hemsley ’18, a founder of Crumbl Cookies, bought The Polar Bear brand and is working to recreate the menu to its truest form. Patrons could be enjoying the “destination experience” as early as August 2023.

The Utah State University Board of Trustees elected a new chair and vice chair at their regular meeting on Wednesday, May 3. Jacey Skinner was elected to serve as chair and Gina Gagon as vice chair, effective July 1, 2023.

USU Alum Connects Youth and Collegiate Athletes with Students with Disabilities |
Founder and CEO of Special Forces Sports Foundation, Matt S. Lance ’00 partnered with Westcliff University to host Special Forces Sports Day. The event welcomed nearly 400 individuals in a day that enabled students with disabilities to experience physical activity and inclusive social interaction. |

Rams' Bobby Wagner Makes Generous Donation to Time for Change Foundation |
Wagner ’12 made a generous donation to the Time for Change Foundation, which helps women "to recreate their life" after they've been incarcerated, in rehabilitation centers or domestic violence shelters. Wagner's generous donation will go to supplying women with what the foundation calls "a starter kit" to developing a productive daily routine. |

Wagner is headed back to the Seattle Seahawks on a 1-year deal to rejoin the team with which he became one of the top linebackers in the NFL. |

Ram ’72 had to save for a year to travel to the United States and was finally able to buy a one-way ticket for $87 on a ship from Mumbai to San Francisco. Ram took 16 credits his first semester at USU in a competitive grad school in a new country where he didn’t speak the language. He got all A’s! |

“Power of One” Doctoral Assistantships: Producing Leaders to Tackle Natural Resource Challenges in Developing Nations |
S.J. & Jessie E. Quinney College of Natural Resources graduates Mike Jacobs ’99 Ph.D., and Cathy Schloeder ’99 Ph.D., forged distinguished careers working in difficult places beset by poverty, violence and tough natural resource challenges. In 2023, the couple created the “Power of One” doctoral research assistantship given out every four years to the winner of a global competition in partnership with a QCNR faculty mentor. |

USU Alum Establishes Scholarship Endowment to Provide Enhanced Student Research Opportunities |
USU created such an impact on alums Rangesan (Rang) Narayanan, ’73 M.S, ’76 Ph.D. and Judi Houston Rangesan, ’77 Ph.D., that in late 2022, Rang funded an endowment in memory of Judi, who died in 2020. The endowment also honors the many faculty mentors who worked with the couple over the years. For Rang, USU offered an education that allowed him to create his own unique focus while earning both a master’s and doctorate in two disciplines. |

At Utah State University’s Caine Lyric Theatre located in historic downtown Logan, patrons are exposed to an environment that provides a connection to the past, while also fostering a current sense of community through the many productions held in the space. For alum Mary Heers ’86, the Lyric holds a piece of her heart. Mary, pictured here second from right, believes so firmly in the building’s importance that she and Art, third from right, have provided the lead gift for the building’s critically needed restoration. |
