Sid Lane ’70 Awarded 2021 USU Alumni Merit Citation

Sid Lane

As one of the first collegiate African American coaches in the United States, Utah State University alum Sid Lane’s time as an Aggie created friendships that set a foundation of success that continues to this day. The former USU linebacker and coach is an avid supporter of the institution, who commits both his time and resources by supporting the next generation of Aggies.

Following the footsteps of his brother MacArthur, Sid joined the Utah State football team in 1966 on a scholarship provided by former coach and mentor Tony Knapp. His athletic agility served the Aggies well on all levels of the game where Sid not only played linebacker, but held positions on both the offensive and defensive lines.

After graduating from USU in 1970 with a bachelor’s in physical education, Sid’s time on the USU football field wasn’t done. From 1970-72, he served as an assistant coach under Chuck Mills, earning the distinction as one of the first minority coaches in NCAA football. Following his tenure with Utah State, Sid would return to his home state of California where he served as a teacher, coach and volunteer at both the collegiate and high school levels. In 2007, Sid served as Grand Marshall for USU’s Homecoming Celebration alongside his brother, Mac.

Known as a great teammate, leader, friend and example to all who played and worked alongside him, Sid surrounded himself with people who would become lifelong influences. The network he created as an Aggie, both on and off the field, allowed Sid to be the successful mentor he is today. Sid is proud of the fact that, along with MacArthur, they were able to establish the Henry Lane Memorial Fund at USU for Black varsity football students in honor of their father. In his home community, Sid attends sporting events at all levels of play to cheer on his fellow athletes and has served as a mentor at the International Trade and Transportation Academy in Oakland, California, where students acquire the skills and knowledge for changing job markets and college admissions.

A true Aggie, Sid exemplifies the spirit and camaraderie of the Utah State family and, as such, the Utah State University Alumni Association is proud to bestow upon Sid Lane the Alumni Merit Citation Award.
